We’ve seen a few questions lately about the long-term plans for Unwritten Legends, the Classic engine, what will happen when the new engine launches, and what all this means for your characters. I wanted to take a moment to lay out our current thinking and share the vision we’re working toward—because you’re all a part of it.
The Classic engine is back online and fully operational, and it’s not going anywhere just yet.
In fact, we’re actively working on bug fixes, engine enhancements, and testing new mechanics inside the Classic world. As long as the technology allows it, we’ll continue backporting features from the new engine to Classic so we can test them with live players before launch.
When the time comes for the new engine to enter beta, both engines may run in parallel for a while. Eventually, the Classic server will sunset, likely after beta concludes and the new world stabilizes—but not without notice or fanfare.
When the new engine launches:
- Your account and character names will be preserved.
- Your roleplay history and background may carry forward, depending on the event timeline.
- Levels, items, and stats will be reset—this is a fresh start.
- Credit and Fame are locked and will be merged moving into the new engine.
Unwritten Legends was built long ago on code that’s served us well—but to carry the game into the future, we needed something cleaner, faster, and more flexible. The new engine aims to:
- Run on the latest supported versions of .NET
- Use a full database-driven architecture for modern development
- Offer new mechanics like:
- Dynamic instanced dungeons
- Faction rep systems
- Automated quests
- Expanded crafting and economy
- More immersive interactions without staff intervention
- Build better tools for the Creatives and Interactions Teams
We may explore monetization down the road, but the game will never become pay-to-win. Any paid features will be cosmetic or convenience-based only, such as additional storage, visual flair, or early access to story content—not mechanical advantages. Currently accrued fame/credit will be ported and players will be allowed to use this currency for these items.
Unwritten Legends has always been a labor of love—and it still is. We're not a corporation. We're a small team and a growing community of people who love rich, detailed lore and collaborative storytelling.
The long-term goal is to continue expanding Thrael, deepening its history, and empowering players to make their mark on the world. The stories that happen here—your stories—matter. Whether you’re foraging in a haunted grove or leading a faction to victory, we want you to feel like your actions have weight.
Personally, UL has become a creative catalyst for me. It’s inspired a novel, art, design—and I hope it becomes the same for you. We're here to share that wonder with others who value what makes this world special.
Thanks for walking this road with us. The best parts of this game have always come from the players—and we’re just getting started.
